Carmen is another fun loving client that we always look forward to meet. Her wedding was actually a love at first sight for her. It was the first gown that caught her eyes and it was the only gown that she tried. And it fitted her so nicely, she bought it off the rack!

Carmen's wedding gown is made of Pure Silk and is embellished with crystal beadings. She then customade a Lace bolero to be worn over her gown.

For her evening gown, she had chosen to customake a simple yet elegant chiffon gown with a long train. The top is beautifully pleated and Corded Laces were used to add sophisticate-ness to her simple dress.

Turqoise and Black~ I am loving the color of this gown.

Do you make cheongsam and qipao?

Yes we do. In fact, we've currently had two cheongsams in our showroom.

This piece of design is made of high quality Gucci Lace and Silk Charmeuse. Whole piece lace were used to create this grand design.

Brides with lower budget can opt for designs like this piece of gown. It is made of Duchess Satin and Corded Lace.

As lesser lace were used on this gown, the cost to make will be cheaper than the previous cheongsam. The price to customake a cheongsam, like I've mentioned just now, depends on the design, fabric & material used and its details. Our price can go from as low as RM700.00 for a simple floor length cheongsam.

Other than lace, we can also do colorful embroideries and beadworks.

Customers are often encouraged to select the lace on their own because the beauty of the gown relies on the cutting and also the lace itself.

Silk Chiffon Evening Gowns

All the gowns above are made of Premium Silk Chiffon. Silk Chiffon is more flowy and soft compare to the normal Polyester Chiffon thus the drapes and pleatings made using Silk Chiffon is so much nicer.

Each crystals, beadings and lace of these gowns are hand-sewn by our designer, Ms. Erin to ensure the originality of the designs.

Audrey and her gang of three bridesmaids never failed to bring laughters to our shop whenever they were here for their fitting. Even when gowns doesn't fit them perfectly they will still laugh it away with a strong believe that we can make it perfect for them. Happy and positive peoples are always so much fun to be with!

Audrey's gown is a V-neck gown with a low V back. It's made of Duchess and Corded lace. To enhance her curves, we made her a seven panels trumpet cut gown.

Veronica first came to us looking for an evening gown for her wedding reception. After going some through some photos, she fell in love with a chiffon dress.

After some discussions, we've modified the original design to something slightly different.

We've added a swirly flower motif design on the waistband using silver beads to make the gown look more chic.

The train at the back is actually detachable. :)

Veronica also brought along her bridemaids to have their dresses made by us. They too chose a similar theme color, which is, the Peacock Green.

I still remember Rachel because she is a really fun and friendly person. She has a total of seven bridesmaids, which broke the record on the most bridesmaid for a bride.

Her wedding gown was inspired by a picture she gave us.

It is made of Duchess Satin, Organza with embroidered details.

Agnes is one of the very few bride I've met that is into DIY. She had DIY-ed most of the things in her wedding. She had even hand-sewn little flowers to her veil. She had our respect!

She had chosen Felisa S005 from our latest collection and had modified the design a little to suit her preferences. It was made with a layer of high quality corded lace on top of Duchess Satin. Silver beads and clear sequins were added to give it a bit of shine.

Kah Wei had first decided to make a short dress as her wedding gown as she prefers simplicity. But after some persuasions by me and her two good friends, she had finally gave in and made a long gown instead. And all of us are glad that her gown turn out really beautiful and even more glad that Kah Wei loves her gown very much!

Kah Wei's pleated one shoulder gown is made completely of Duchess Satin with a champagne waistband and ribbon.

The back of her gown is also criss cross-ed to show more curves on her body.

This gown proved that a simple gown can be equally gorgeous too.

Neoromantic's Bride : Ming Hui

Ming Hui, if I remember correctly was a really shy but friendly client.

She had picked a design from our collection and modified it a little by adding a layer of Organza to soften the look.

She was really happy with her wedding gown and ended up making another gown, the evening gown. :D

Love the color of her evening gown.. I didn't expect it to turn out so gorgeous!

Wedding Exhibition, Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside

A few weeks ago, we had accepted an invitation by Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside Resort to attend their wedding exhibition.

Both Erin and I met up at our shop before the both of us started our journey to Pullman Putrajaya with the help of Erin's GPS. It was quite challenging because both of us had only been to the resort once and we didn't really know the way to Putrajaya. So both of us have got to rely on the GPS and our the roadsigns. It was an adventurous start!

We were once of the earliest vendor to arrive (to my surprise!) that day. The first thing we did was to take pout the gowns from the garment bags, hang it nicely on the racks. Arranged our catalogues and brochures on the table.

We had quite a few of potential customers that were interested in our services and products. During the exhibition, there were several activities too. For example some fashion shows by Carven, a photography talk by John Low and a few lucky draws. We've even sponsored one of the wedding gown from our latest collection. I wonder who is the lucky bride that won the Grand Lucky Draw...

Behind The Scene Of Our Catalouge Photoshoot

The day started off really early with Erin and SuSien carrying all the wedding gowns and stuffs into the car. After that we were meeting up in a mamak's place for breakfast. We left the restaurant after meal and head over to Pullman Putrajaya relying on our boss' sense of direction and the good old GPS.

Upon reaching Pullman Resort, me and Alesia headed over to the restaurant for their complimentary buffet breakfast.

After a quick coffee we went to our room to prepare for the photoshoot. The other model, Angeline, Tonny and Woody the photographers and Cindy were already there.

We wasted no time and started off with Cindy doing Alesia's make up and hair while Tonny and Woody had gone out to look for some strategic site for the shoot.

While the make-up was being done, the rest of us were preparing the gowns and headpieces to be used for the shoot.

After Alesia had everything on, Erin sent her down and the shotting begun!

And it was Angeline's turn to be dolled up.

The day passed by with Cindy doing touche ups on the models' face, gown changings and more gown changings.

And at about 1.30pm, all 9 of us jammed in a car and off we went to Alamanda for our lunch. It was raining at that time and some of the roads were kinda flooded. We had to drive over the road divider to the other side of the road to continue our journey tu lunch.

After lunch, we continued to do what we've been doing the whole morning.

All of us were pretty tired up be the time the shoot was over!

Both models changed out of the wedding gowns and we had started to tidy up our stuffs and to carry back the gowns and racks back to the car.

We had some group photos before checking out.

After checking out and saying our goodbyes to Angeline, Tonny, Woody and Cindy, the 5 of us drove back to SS2.

Although tiring, it was actually really fun today as it was like a photo shooting outing with friends instead of work. We certainly gained a new experience on how catalouge shoots are done.

I can't wait for the next shoot!

Fabrics And The Effects On Your Shape

In the previous post, I've written about the shapes and designs that suit the bridesmaids that are on the bigger size. Today, I will be talking about the different types of fabrics and the effect that it has on a person's shape. There are so much varieties of fabrics out there but I will only mention a few because these fabric are the most common ones when it comes to bridesmaid dresses.

Taffeta

Taffeta is a crisp, smooth woven fabric made from silk or synthetic fibres. It has a really shiny color that reflects to the light. It is one of my most favorite fabric because of it's gorgeous color and texture. As it is very light, it looks really good with pleatings.

As taffeta itself is really light, we normally add another layer of Duchess to make the shape of the dress looks structured. Therefore, plus sized girls don't have to worry about it being too light thus making them look big. A great fabric for both fat and skinny girls.

Duchess

Duchess satin or bridal satin is an elegant and lustrous fabric. It is widely used to make bridal gown due to its shiny, heavy, and luxurious texture.

It is one of the most slimming fabric one could ever find. So normally we would advise bigger girls to use Duchess Satin to make their dresses.

Chiffon

Chiffon is a delicate, flowy, sheer and see-through fabric. It is most suitable if you would like something really flowy.

But as it is really soft, it will show off the shape of your body really clearly. No no if you are not on the slim side. But if you still like Chiffon very very much, you can change the layer underneath to Duchess Satin to give your dress a structured shape.

Charmeuse

Charmeuse is a really soft and glossy fabric. This type of fabric is a BIG no-no if you are not slim enough because of the thin fabric.

So now you know what fabric you should go for next time you wanna make your dresses. :)

Plus Sized Bridesmaids

Cuts and colors play an important role in flattering a person's shape. No matter how big or small your bridesmaids are, there will still be designs that will make you look really beautiful. But of course, a size 18 bridesmaid musn't expect to look like a size 10 no matter what cut they wear. I really did have one or two plus sized customers that came to us looking for dresses that will make her look 4 sizes slimmer. Oh my, that is quite impossible, to be honest. But then, you can always choose cuts that won't make you look extra chubbier. Here are some ideas for you.

#1 Trust me, everyone can wear strapless dress unless you have really huge and heavy set of bust. Curvier neckline will give your top some shape but if you have bigger bust then it's better to stick to a straight neckline.

#2 For the skirt part, slim A-line skirt will make your hips look slimmer. But if you feel like it's too plain jane and too uniform, you can opt for pleats like Picture #1 & Picture #2. For those that doesn't mind about having big hips, you can opt for straight or pencil skirt. It gives you a shape but like I said, it will enhance the shape of your hips as well.

#3 Maid of honor can go for long dresses, if your bride approves it. Long dresses will often elongate your height making you look taller and slimmer.

#4 For those who wished to cover the fats under their arms, go for V-neck tops. V-necks flatters those with bigger bust very well too.

#5 Cap sleeves are like the IN thing now. It helps to support the dress for those who are not used to strapless dresses. And then it can be worn as an off-shoulder dress if you push the sleeves towards your arms.

If you have big arms, never ever make dresses with short sleeves because it will not help in hiding the arms, it will only make people focus on your arms more.

#6 If you like something a lil bit different from the normal bridesmaid dresses, you can choose to make something like this. It is a halter dress but with different type of neckline. Those with bigger bust can do something like this but without the pleatings at the top because the pleats enhances the size of your bust.

#7 Pick something which is cut at your natural waist because it make you look the slimmest. Contrary to popular believes, empire cut doesn't make a person look slimmer. It will make you look taller, yes, but slimmer? NO.

Imagine this, if the skirt falls directly from under the bust, it will look like a pregnant dress. But if the empire cut dress is tighten at the wait to give you a shape, your tummy will bulge out. The last thing you want is for people to think that you are pregnant.

#8 I am gonna explain the last tip without any picture. DO NOT ever make dress with ruffles at the waist. Because, it will double up the size of your hips and make you look bigger than ever.

So the trick to have a nice bridesmaid dress is to pick something which is simple, cut at the waist, add a little details like ribbon, flowers or brooch.

Ok.. here's the good news, as you girls knew earlier, we have like a bunch of new collections coming in right, well, guess what???? THEY ARE HERE!!! All of them!!! And we've been calling all the customers that had left us their contacts. If you are interested in trying out the gowns from our new collections, feel free to drop by our showroom too.

And another good news is, we are going to have a photo shoot session in Pullman Putrajaya on the 5th of May for all the new gowns in our collection. This time, it is gonna be a real serious photo shoot instead of the ones like what we used to have in our shop. Instead of taking the photos ourselves, we had appointed a photographer. And instead of a stiff and not-so-happy looking mannequin, we are gonna have real beautiful models this time.

She came to our showroom today for fitting sessions and my oh my, she fits to our gowns nicely. No alteratons needed, good news to us! :D

Alesia was introduced to us by a friend, and we are really glad that we called her. She is gorgeous and she looks effortlessly beautiful. We are pretty confident that our catalouge are gonna come out looking really good. And the best part is, she doesn't have the model attitude, she is really friendly and easy to talk to. That's really important if we are to work together.

These are the frequently asked questions (FAQs) by our customers before they place orders.

1) What does Neoromantic Bridal Sdn. Bhd. do?
Neoromantic Bridal Sdn. Bhd. is a company which specialised in customaking bridal and evening gowns. We have our own factory in Xiamen, China to produce the gowns for us. Although we have our own line of collections, you can also bring us pictures from other sources as we are able to customake a gown according to the pictures.

2) Where is your showroom located?
We are located in No.145A, 1st Floor, Jalan SS2/24, 47300 Petaling Jaya.

3) What are your prices like?
Our prices are based on the designs and fabric used. The price are ranges from RM800 for a simpler design gown. Prices are inclusive of fabric and workmanship.

4) What are the order process like?

If you can visit our showroom, you can either choose a design from our collections or bring us a picture of gowns that you like. we will then take your body measurements, and discuss with you on the further details. Once confirmed, you will need to pay us a deposit of 50% from the total amount.

If you are not able to visit us, you can e-mails us your body measurements and pictures through e-mail. We will then discuss further on the details online (MSN or E-mail). Once confirmed, you can pay us the deposit by online transfer or cash transfer to our company account.

Once we received the 50% deposit, we will sketch and send you the sketches of your gowns.

5) Can I try on your gowns before making any order?
Yups. You are welcomed to visit us during our business hours to try on the sample designs that we have in our gowns. We will bring in new collection of designs every season to keep our customers up-to-date!

6) Besides bridal and evening gown, what else can you make?
Besides gowns for the brides, we can also customake Bridesmaid Dresses, Flower Girl Dresses, ROM Dress and also Formal Dress for any other occassions. Other than that, we can also make modern style Qipao/Cheongsam.

7) What are your business hours?
We are open from 10.00 am till 7.30 pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

Wedding Accessories Part 1 : Lingerie & Body Support

Ok, now that you've got your gowns done. You will still need that extra little something to make it perfect. Something to hide the humps and bumps . Something to hide your body imperfections. And something to make you look slimmer. And you don't have to diet for months to have that perfect body because all you need is that perfect lingerie and body support.

One advice I have for the brides is, always bring the undergarments that you'll be wearig on your wedding whenever you do gown fittings. ALWAYS! Because it will help the seamstress to adjust the gowns more accurately. Even a bra or underpants play a really important part to gowns fitting. Here are some pointers when you are shopping for body supports.

1) Shop for smooth bras that are smooth and free of embellishment, lace and beads will create a lumpy look.

2) Buy a variety of bras to see which style works best with your wedding dress. Before handing over your charge card, ask whether the store offers a full refund on items returned with tags attached.

3) Although a bra pad may be built into your wedding dress, wearng your own bra is often necessary to enhance the shape of your bust.

Here are some body supports that are available in the market;

1) Body Shaper
Slim the stomach, hips, thighs, and/or derriere.

2) Bustier
A tight-fitting top worn as a brassiere. V-backed versions, made with extra boning and stiff cups, can be found for low-back wedding dresses.

3) Cincher
A highly slimming, one-piece undergarment for full-figured brides.

4) Corset
The best strapless support available, this garment extends from above or below the bust to below the hips. Garters may be attached.

5) Girdle
Panty that helps to hold in the tummy

This is a mermaid cutting gown with a tie back ribbon at the back. the whole gown is so full of corded laces, all the lace lovers will go crazy about it!

For brides who prefers something simpler and not over the top, this gown is the right one for you. Made of Real Silk, it has a pleated bodice and it's beaded on the neckline and waistline. This is what I call simple and nice.

This one shoulder gown is perfect for those who wanna feel like a Princess on her wedding day. It's made of Duchess Satin, American Tulle and also Corded laces.

If you like to be all cutesy in your wedding, I guess this gown will suits you most. It's fully beaded at the bodice. And besides the pick-up skirt details, this gown is also embroidered along the train to complete it's cute princess look.

Last but not least, this is my most favorite dress of all. Simple but not too simple. It's made of Taffeta and corded laces. And the bias pleatings on the waist could really do magic to enhance the waistline. Try it to believe it.

Alençon Lace ----> Fine lace with designs often embellished with beads or sequins
Appliqué ----> A decorative fabric design that is applied to another piece of fabric

Wedding Accessories Part 2 : Headpiece

Previously you've read and understand all the things that you need to know about one of the most essential wedding accessories, the veil. Today, you'll be able to know more in details about the headpices that you can use to decorate your crown.

a) Backpiece

A barrette or comb that fastens the veil to the back of the head.

b) Bunwrap

A circular band or piece of fabric that encircles a bun or updo; a veil may be attached to it.

c) Crown

A formal, full-circle headpiece that sits on top of the head.

d) Hair Vine

Wired vine-like ornament held in place with a comb or pin.

e) Half Crown

A half-circle of jewels that is smaller than a crown but taller than a tiara.

f) Headband

A half-circle band available in a variety of widths and styles.

g) Juliet Cap

A small, round skullcap adorned with pearls or semi-precious stones that fits snugly on the top or back of the head.

h) Pillbox Hat

A small, round, brimless hat (think Jacqueline Kennedy).

i) Pouf

A gathered piece of tulle or netting—fastened to a comb, headband, or headpiece—that creates height for the veil.

j) Snood

A knitted or openwork net used to encase long hair at the back of the neck, or attached to a hat.

k) Tiara

A bejeweled or beaded semi-circle.

l) Wreath (or Garland)

A crown of faux or real flowers or foliage.

Wedding Accessories Part 1 : Veils

Here are some of the tips and things should know when you are purchasing your veil or headpieces;

1) Always check your rear view when trying on a veil. To show off the back of your wedding dress, choose a sheer or single-layer design.

2) A simple, unembellished veil flatters an elaborate wedding dress best, while a classic gown can be paired with a plain or an ornate confection.

3) Any adornments on your veil should begin below the point at which your dress ornamentation ends—this way the two won’t compete.

4) Take a brisk walk with your headpiece to make sure that it stays firmly in place. You don’t want to lose it before you reach the altar.

5) Take your face shape into account when making your selection. A veil that falls straight down narrows a round, full visage; a waterfall design adds width to an oblong face. A square jaw benefits a longer veil, while a heart-shaped face looks best with a veil that falls behind the neck.

6) Planning to doff your veil after the "I do’s"? Invest in a headpiece—try a wide satin headband—that looks good without the tulle. The headpiece should have fabric hooks and loops or Velcro fasteners for easy veil removal.

7) Make sure your blusher veil is long enough to flip over your head.

In case you are still blurry about the terms used when it comes to veils, here are some pictures to help you out. As they say, picture says a thousand words ^_^V

a) Birdcage Veil (also known as birdcage veil)

A short, single layer worn over the face, then lifted back over the head during the ceremony.

b) Cathedral Veil

Trails two to three metres behind the wedding dress.

3) Chapel Veil

Extends a lil bit longer than the floor length.

4) Double Tier Veil (Double Layers Veil)

A veil of two layers, usually of different lengths (either two veils or a veil and blusher). It comes with a comb for easy wearing.

5) Elbow Length

Extends to the bride’s elbow.

6) Fingertip Length

Reaches fingertips when arms are relaxed; the most versatile style.

7) Flyaway

A multi-layered veil that just brushes the shoulders and gives a clear view of the back of the wedding dress.

8) Fountain Veil

A shoulder- or elbow-length veil gathered at the crown of the head and cascading around the face to form a "fountain" shape.

9) Mantilla Veil (or known as Lace Trim Veil)

A Spanish-inspired style: a piece of lace or lace-edged tulle, secured with a comb and framing the face; may be any length between elbow and ballet.

10) Ribbon-edge Veil

A veil with a line of ribbon stitched around its edge.

Taffeta Galore~

Everyone has their favorite type of fabric when it comes to making their dream wedding gown. Brides can choose from either using Duchess Satin, Chiffon, Charmeuse, Organza, Tulle etc. For me, my favorite fabric is TAFFETA.

Taffeta is a very light type of fabric. Lighter than Duchess Satin but more structured than Chiffon. Taffeta itself comes with some pattern on it's fabric making a very simple gown looks really beautiful. And the most interesting part about Taffeta is, it reflects when it is place against the light. For example, an olive green Taffeta will look like gold when it's placed at a different directions.

Neoromantic Bridal now have a few gowns made of Taffeta that are ready to be sold off the shelves.

Wedding Gown

This wedding gown is made of Taffeta, tulle and beaded laces. The gown is very nicely pleated making every bride that wears this look really slim at the waist. The lace is added to make this gown look more sophisticated and at the same time look really modern.

Evening Gown

This is a red two-piece evening gown. The bodice is pleated to give it more shape. The bodice is a tie-back at the back so that you are free from worrying about looking for a tailor at the last minute when you lost more and more weight no thanks to stress. Gold color laces are also added at at the bottom of the skirt. After the wedding, you can also wear the top with jeans and look super hot in it.

ROM & Bridesmaid Dresses

This is a sleeveless dress with a bubble skirt. A square neck give it a really elegant look. A pink ribbon is given so that you can tie in around your waist to give your waist a shape. You can also opt to wear this dress without the ribbon too.

This is a tube dress in peach color. The ribbon is fixed at the waist. And made it with hidden zip at the back.

This is a very elegant dress with a ribbon at the neck. It's not too revealing but at the same time look very sexy too. And it's in peach color too.

A fishtail cutting gown with "curve down" strapless neckline. It has a Duschess Satin as its inner layer and a layer of beautifully arranged Corded laces as the outer layer. Ribbon around the waist will make the waist of the wearer looked more defined. If you are to customake this gown. you can change the color of the ribbon to the color of your choice. This is one timeless piece of elegant and gorgeous gown that won't go out of date.

A mermaid cutting gown made of Duchess Satin and also a layer of Organza at the bottom of the skirt. This gown is full of embroideries and also beadings.

How To Choose A Wedding Gown Design

In choosing a design, there are 6 things you should keep your eye on:

Color: The color you select will depend upon your own coloring; dark-skinned brunettes look good in ivory or beige, and fair-skinned blondes may find they look better in a white pastel or pure white gown.

Length: The type of wedding you're having will affect your gown's length. Full-length gowns are fitting for formal weddings. At informal weddings, which are typically small in size and fanfare (and common for second, third, and fourth+ marriages), the bride can wear a knee-length skirt. The skirt should cover the knees and drape at least one inch below the top of the kneecap. Ankle-length is acceptable too, and it can be very classy, sexy, fashionable and romantic.

Silhouette: The "silhouette" refers to the shape of the gown and how it hugs your body. Popular styles include the Princess and A-line, ball gown (i.e., the Cinderella look), sheaths, a mermaid shape, an empire silhouette, or a two-piece.

Train: We suggest that if you want the long train, that it be detachable so that it won't get stepped on, torn, or otherwise ruined during the reception.

Mood: The mood of your dress can be Romantic, Modern, Traditional, or Classic.
Size: As with any other wardrobe selection, when it comes to picking a wedding dress, size does matter. For brides petite and large, the size of a bridal gown is ordered based on measurements of bust, waist, hips and height. Check this chart out to get an idea.

Wedding Gowns Sleeves

Whether you want to show off your totally buff arms or hide a figure flaw, pay careful attention to the sleeves on your gown.

Cap - very short sleeves; only covering the shoulders, sometimes seen on off-the-shoulder gowns.

Fitted - a tight sleeve cut very close to the arm, best for those with thin arms.

Juliet - Renaissance look, tightly fitted with a small pouf at the shoulder.

Leg o' Mutton - the Dynasty look, very full at the shoulder, very fitted at the forearm.

Ceremony Of Shoes

The idea of luck is the principal thought associated with shoes during marriage custom. Sharper Knowlson (1998) considered shoe customs were in existence from the time of the Egyptians but not confined to any one race. The privalence of new shoes in wedding folk lore would also suggest a passage rite.

For most the connection between footwear, luck and marriage still continues. An old custom was to throw a shoe at weddings for luck and this continues today, in several forms. Many wedding cakes are decorated with miniature charms, including silver shoes.

These may relate to Biblical times, when removing the shoe denoted the confirmation of a contract for redemption or change of ownership. An example of this is given in the laws and ordinances within the book of Deuteronomy.

A common practice was for a widow to marry her husband's surviving brother. In the event of him refusing to do so, she was directed to "come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot." This action was accepted as the widow's assertion of independence as well as declaring her brother-in law's failure to comply with the law.

In a similar manner the Middle Ages custom found throughout Europe was for the bride's father to give an old boot or shoe from his daughter's left foot to the bridegroom on their marriage. This was thought to indicate the passing of responsibility for her well being.

In Medieval France the groom would sit with his shoe over his brides foot alternatively other custom variation was for the groom to tap the bride on the head with her shoe to show, he was master.

Another custom found across the world relates to removing shoes or giving shoes during the ceremony. The ancient Inca Indians of Peru had a custom where the couple were only considered officially wed, when they took off their sandals and handed them to each other. The significance of taking your shoes off may relate to submission to another's will.

When the Emperor Vladimir proposed marriage to the daughter of Reginald, she refused him with the words "I will not take off my shoe to the son of a slave". Removing the shoe may refer in this context to sexual intercourse.

In Finland, traditionally the whole family accompanied the married couple to the bridal suite. The mother would not let the groom go to his bride until he had given her a pair of shoes. In some countries the wedding shoe was placed at the head of the bed on the husbands side to symbolise his sexual possession and to encourage fertility.

Another variant came from Wales where the bride and groom were presented with a pair of shoes joined together by a chain all cut from a single block of wood. Originally one little cavity contained a lump of sugar and the other coal to ensure the couple might never lack sustenance and warmth. Even today boot shaped confetti is ceremoniously thrown over the happy couple.

In ancient times sandals were often ornamented with horns, crescents and other representations of the moon. The casting of shoes at marriage ceremonies may have had something to do with this. The throwing of flowers and various grains are thought to be associated with fertility and it maybe shoes have a similar function. Throwing shoes at someone going on a journey was also thought to bring good luck. Confetti thrown at weddings is thought to be a remnant of this custom.

In more recent times the tying of old shoes to the wedding car may relate to the Middle Ages custom of throwing shoes to fend off evil spirits. It was commonly thought the devil was offended by the smell of humans and perhaps the basis for the practice was the presence of stench from sweaty feet. The origin of throwing shoes after the bridal pair remains obscure but could relate to the time when the bride was carried off by force. The throwing of shoes may symbolically demonstrate the clash of the relatives as the groom abducted the valued family member away. But this is unlikely since other customs would associate throwing shoes with, a good luck gesture.

Wedding Dress Styles

There are five major styles to choose from: Romantic, Glamorous, Classic, Beach/Destination and Contemporary.

Romantic
These gowns are characterized by billowy princess or A-line skirts as well as fluted or mermaid skirts with dreamy lace, silk netting, or wispy tulle overlays. Sheath gowns also fall in this category and are usually adorned with features such as lace, crystal and pearl beading. Various necklines, waistlines and bodices can be used and will be accented with embroidery, crystal beading, sequined appliqués and lace.

Glamorous
These dresses are the “walk-down-the-red-carpet" style of dress with body hugging satin or matte-jersey sheath styles that may, or may not, have trains. Reminiscent of the 20's and 30's Nouveau period, these dresses are characterized by long fluted and trumpet style skirts with either tiers, bubble skirts or a slimmer A-line skirt. Feathers may be added for extra flare! This dress style demands dramatic and daring necklines with various waistlines and unusual cuts and panels to the dress. Sequins, beaded overlays, satin roses and appliqués appear on the gown but not in great amounts.

Classic
This “belle of the ball" classic style usually has simple and clean lines defining the elegance of the gown. Waistlines and necklines can vary with this style of dress as do the types of skirts (Princess, soft A-line, ball gown or a fluted hem) as well as the length of the train. Limited amounts of beading, lace accents, and embroidery are found on these dresses in order to maintain their simple nature. Additional accents may be found through the use of a satin sash tied at the waist and draping down the back of the gown. Raw silk, satin, and organza are the most common fabrics for this style of dress.

Beach/Destination
This flowing and breezy style of dress is best suited for those want that windswept beach wedding baring your sun-kissed shoulders as you say “I do”. Beach/Destination style gowns can come with a casual air or fall under a more dramatic style like a light chiffon gown with a fluted skirt. Destination gowns can also be Glamorous with a body hugging sheath dress with a sexy, plunging back or a more humble version of the Romantic style with a lace overlay. A Destination gown can also have informal Classic tones with simple lines of crystal beading on the waistline or on the straps.

Contemporary
This style seems to be very popular either featuring a strapless neckline with a corset bodice and lace-ups at the back. What is nice about this style is that it can accommodate fluctuations in a bride’s weight as the back panel is not only removable but the laces can be loosened or tightened to perfectly fit any bride’s shape. Cut-A well cut diamond will reflect light from side to side, back to the eye so it seems to dazzle with fiery brilliance. If the stone is cut too shallow, light escapes through the bottom, if it's too deep then light escapes through the sides. In both instances, the diamond will loose its sparkle.

Carat-Carat is the standard measure of a diamond's weight so the larger the diamond, the higher is the carat. However, size isn't everything as two diamonds of the same carat can still look very different depending on their cut, clarity and colour.

Colour-Diamonds come in a myriad of colours to yellowish and brownish to the really rare - like pink, blue, green, red and so on. In general, the more colourless a diamond, the higher its value because it allows light to pass through easily, dispersing a rainbow colours upon exit.

However, that doesn't mean fancy coloured diamonds are worthles! Natural coloured diamonds are rare and therefore more expensive than colourless diamonds.

Clarity-Natural impefections in diamonds are called 'inclusions'. The lesser the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond. A stone will be graded according to the size, number, position, nature and colour of these inclusions. Clarity also refers to transparency. A good stone should not be milky or cloudy because will limit the amount of light it can reflect.

Shape-Commonly confused with the cut o the stone, shape refers to the appearance of the diamond. The common shapes are round, princess, trilliant, heart, oval, emerald, marquise and radiant. "The round diamond shapes in Malaysia and in fact, around the world. It gives out the best fire and scintilation compared to other cuts." says Wong.

Settings

Choosing the right setting to flaunt your stone is a matter of personal preference but there are certain limiting factors. The shape of the stone will narrow the field in terms of settings are designed with a particular shape in mind.

Some factors you'll need to consider include the design of the band, number and combination of stones and overall style. Personally, I believe the diamond should always be the centre of attraction. The setting should be simple to show off the diamond to its best effect.

As diamonds are traditionally valued for the degree of whiteness, white metals such as platinum or white pleated gold with claw or prong settings are most flattering. The claw settings bring out the brilliance of the gemstones.

Caring For Diamonds

Diamonds may be the hardest material on but that doesn't mean it won't be damaged. Avoid knocking your diamond against hard surfaces as this can cause chipping. It is also better to remove your jewellery before bathing, swimming, sleeping, cooking, cleaning or doing heavy work.

For a thorough cleaning, drop your diamond off at a jeweller, who will use an ultrasonic cleanser to shake off accumulated dirt. If the stone is worn regularly, have it cleaned every three to six months; otherwise, a yearly cleaning would be sufficient.

It is also advisable that owners to store each diamond piece separately in soft pouches to avoid scratches or damage.

Malay weddings are culturally rich with meaningful ceremonies.

Merisik
Merisik literally means 'to spy' in Bahasa Melayu. In this ritual, the parents of the groom send a relative to the prospective bride's house to seek permission and blessings for the marriage. The parents of the bride do the same for the groom. The groom and bride are not present. During the merisik, both sets of parents also discuss the dowry and date of the wedding ceremony. This practise stemmed from the days when it would have been deemed inapproriate for the members of the opposite sex to meet (or date) before marriage.

Bertunang
Once both sets of parents agree to the marriage, the next step is to have the bertunang (engagement) ceremony. The groom's parents send the engagement ring and the dowry (hantaran) to the bride-to-be's home. The hantaran consists of a change of clothes for the bride, money, betel nut, sireh, sweets and pastries to sgnify a sweet married life for the couple.

Akad Nikah
This ceremony, where the kadi solemnises the wedding, takes place at the bride's home. The groom has to repeat the Ijab Kahbul (a contract that binds the bride to the groom) once to the father of the bride and a second time to the kadi.

The Bersanding
On the big day, the groom is escorted by a kampung procession to the bride's house where he is treated to a silat (a form of martial arts) performance before being ushered into the bride's home. The bride and groom are then invited to sit on a beautifully decorated dais called the pelamin. Once seated on the pelamin, the couple are blessed with tepung tawar by the relatives and guests, with wishes for a happy marriage and many children.

After the blessing ceremony, the couple called Raja Sehari, feed each other yellow glutinous rice to symbolise the unity of the newlyweds. (It is believe that the term Raja sehari - King and Queen for a day - dates back to the melaka Sultanate when there was a legal ruling that allowed newlyweds to dress is richly, like kings and queens just for the day)

Makan berdamai
Both the bride and groom's family then sit down together for a meal called makan berdamai. It literally means to 'eat in peace' as it is symbolically the first both the bride and groom have a meal together.

Checking the astrology

Arranged marriages are still common among the Indian community although love matches are on the rise. For Hindus, consulting the astrologer to check the couple's astrology charts to see whether the couple are compatible is a must. If everything matches, they are given the go-ahead and the couple then prepare for the engagement.

Parisam (The Engagement)

The Parisam announces the betrothal of the couple to friends and relatives. At the ceremony, the groom arrives with seven platters containing different gifts, including jewellery, for the bride.

The bride's family then match the amount of jewellery from the groom., but it is all given to the bride. Agreements on the wedding date and the dowry (if there's any) are reached on that day. After the date is fixed, wedding cards are personally hand delivered to close relatives and friends.

Thirumanam (Wedding Ceremony)
The wedding cere,pny is usually held in a hall or temple and the service of a Prokithar or priest is required to solemnise the wedding. First, the groom is summoned to sit on the manavarai where the marriage is conducted. (In nearly all Hindu weddings, the marriage ceremony is conducted while the couple are seated on the floor). Accompanied by his best friend or brother-in-law, he sits while the priest conducts prayers. After the prayers, the groom washes the feet of his parents to show his filial piety and after more prayers he is then led away while the bride is brought in and undergoes the same ceremony. After the ceremony, she is given a sari (which has been blessed during the prayers), bought by the groom's family. The bride then leaves to change into this new sari.

Three married women are then invited to tie a yellow thali (string) to a tree in the temple. This symbolic act is to wish the newly-weds a happy and prosperous life.

Then to the accompaniment of musicians, both the bride and groom finally sit together on the manavarai. The groom sits on the left while the bride sits on the right. This sitting arrangement means they are not married yet. The parents of the bride and groom then axchange sandalwood, to show their acknowledgement of their new son and daughter. Later, they also distribute grains of rice to their guests which will be thrown on the couple when the thali is tied.

When the groom ties the thali around the bride's neck, he ties three knots on the thali to symbolise that this woman is already married. Husband and wife then change their seating arrangement - he sits on the right and she on the left.

The bride and groom then walk around the manavarai three times. After that the groom places the minji (toe ring) on his bride's foot, another declaration of her married status. This practice comes from the old days when women walked around with downcast eyes. A minji on a man's toe indicated to the women that he is married.

The newlyweds then sit on the wedding dais to receive gifts from the guests. After the ceremony, the bride goes back to the groom's house to start new life as a wife. Three days after the ceremony, the bride and her husband are invited back to her parents' house. A reception is held there, where the bride's mother presents her with household appliances and cooking utensils to wish her a happy wedded life.

Marrying Tradition : Chinese

Most Chinese wedding are heavily laden with symbolism that wish the couple a happy life together that is filled with luck and prosperity and many children.

The hair-combing ceremony
The hair-combing ceremony is held the night before the wedding day, between 11pm and 1am. It is performed simultaneously on the bride and groom in their respective homes.

In each home, a married lady who has had a good life and many children is chosen to perform the ceremony. While combing the hair, the ladies performing the ceremony chant three auspicious phrases to bless the about-to-married person with everlasting love, many children and prosperity.

After the ceremony, everyone is served glutinous rice balls (tang yuan) in sweet syrup. This signifies the sweet life the couple will have after their wedding.

Picking up the bride
On the big day, the groom has to arrive at the bride's home at an auspicious time. In the old days, most marriages were arranged and the couple would not have met till this ceremony. this ceremony gave an opportunity for the bride's friends and relatives to get to know the groom.

During the ritual, the bride's friends tease the groom and he has to win the bride by performing certain feats. Nowadays, the groom is made to do things like eating wasabi and chilli to show his love for the bride. All this is done in good fun.

The tea ceremony
The tea ceremony is held twice. Once in the bride's home and then again in the groom's home. During the tea ceremony, the newly-weds present the bride with gifts such as gold, jewellery and money. After that, children of the household serve tea to the couple, who give them 'lucky money' (ang pow).

The idea behind the tea ceremony is to introduce the bride and groom to their respective families. Jewellery and money given during the ceremony is kept by the bride as traditionally women did not own any property or valuables. So, any money and jewellery from the wedding is hers to keep.

The bridal chamber
When the couple enter the bridal chamber in the groom's house, they will be greeted with a spread of sweets and fruits on the marital bed. These items consist of dried longan, red dates, lotus seeds and sweets. There is a reason why these items are chosen.

Another tradition that has survived to this day is the filing in of a chamber port with the same food items and sealing it with red paper. When the couple enters the room, a young boy is instructed to tear the red paper on the pot, and reach in and take out the items - this is suppose to ensure that the couple soon have many children.

Going back to the bride's home
After visitng her marital home, the bride changes out of her wedding dress for the return trip to her own home. The bride and groom are then treated as guests in the bride's home. The couple also brings back gifts such as apples with them. Apples are popular because the sound like "peace" in Mandarin.
